Job summary

Asheville City Schools is seeking a Preschool Instructional Assistant at Claxton Elementary in Asheville, North Carolina. The role supports the teacher with early childhood activities, supervises students, and helps create a safe, engaging learning environment.

The position is full-time for 10 months, with duties ranging from clerical tasks to assisting with large and small group activities, field trips, meals, and readiness for the classroom day.

Qualifications

• Two years of college required.
• Evidence of previous successful work experiences with children desirable.
• Knowledge of child growth, development and behavioral characteristics.
• Ability to take and follow directions.
• Willingness to study, cooperate and support school activities.
• Pass a criminal background check.
• Hold a CDA credential or be willing to obtain one if required by the program.
• Hold an AA degree in Early Childhood, or be willing to obtain one if required by the program.

Responsibilities

• Assist with classroom activities and supervise students closely in the classroom and on the playground.
• Engage children in conversations related to play and learning.
• Attend to children who become ill and support daily routines.
• Assist in building pupils' self-concept and positive self-esteem through interactions.
• Perform clerical duties, record attendance, and obtain/organize supplies.
• End of day tasks: secure room, tidy spaces, and ensure doors are closed.

Education

Two-year college degree in Early Childhood Education

48 hours of college credit in Early Childhood Education (within last 5 years)
