Job summary

Shive-Hattery’s West Des Moines office is seeking an entry-level Civil Designer who is pursuing their Professional Engineering license. The role supports a wide range of water resources projects, including stormwater, drainage, and green infrastructure, with opportunities to learn across multiple design disciplines.

Ideal candidates have a Civil/Environmental/Biosystems background, strong communication, and the willingness to learn and contribute to team-based design and field observation tasks.

Qualifications

• Degree from an accredited engineering school in civil/environmental/biosystems engineering.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
• AutoCAD Civil 3D experience a plus.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Service oriented to clients.
• Internships/summer experience in civil engineering or construction a plus.
• Ability to read and understand construction plans/drawings.
• Must have FE exam planned or passed in Iowa.
• Willingness to learn system administration tasks for design software.
• Keen interest in solving technical problems and collaborating in a team.

Responsibilities

• Assist more senior civil engineers with entry level tasks.
• Assist design for public and private projects across sectors (industrial, healthcare, education, commercial, government).
• Prepare AutoCAD drawings, reports, and technical specifications.
• Design tasks include roadway, trails, site grading, drainage, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, project phasing, traffic control, and site design.
• Assist with construction administration and observation, reporting and contractor compliance.
• Work with multi-discipline teams and manage time with attention to detail.
• Projects across Iowa and other states, involving drainage, flood studies, wetlands, dams, and stream restoration.
