This vacancy announcement is for one position posted across multiple possible duty stations. That includes New Delhi, India and Washington DC. The selected candidate's duty station will be determined based on organizational requirements and business needs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The ET Consultant’s (ETC) primary role will be to support Industry Specialists in technical due diligence of potential and on-going real estate decarbonization projects. Working closely with IFC’s Industry Specialists, IFC’s contracted consulting firm(s), and client/client’s local consultant(s), the ETC will either lead or provide support in the following areas for Decarbonizing Real Estate for Impact and Value Enhancement (DRIVE) projects:

  • Assess sustainability strategies to identify gaps and areas of improvement
  • Evaluate energy efficiency, energy storage, building electrification and renewable measures to assess their feasibility for DRIVE projects
  • Conduct and/or review baseline assessments for real estate portfolio emissions
  • Provide recommendations to determine clear climate goals (net-zero by 2050, etc.) in line with international frameworks, such as Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi)
  • Provide recommendations on the decarbonization strategy and pathway prepared for DRIVE
  • Recommend strategies to reduce greenhouse emissions and energy, water and material consumption for real estate portfolios
  • Review CapEx plans for the portfolio to meet required targets, savings, and payback period
  • Research new regulations in relevant markets that would impact the business operations and valuations for Clients
  • Review strategies for maximizing on-site/off-site renewable energy options
  • Review framework for monitoring and reporting on the progress of the implementation of DRIVE client’s decarbonization roadmap
  • Other related tasks, as needed
Selection Criteria
Education
  • Master's degree in building science, architectural engineering, mechanical engineering, sustainability, or a closely related field is required.
Professional Experience
  • Minimum of five years of operational experience in real estate decarbonization, building energy efficiency, or technical advisory.
  • Experience within a real estate company, sustainability consultancy, or technical advisory firm is strongly preferred.
  • Prior exposure to working with IFC, MDB, or a financial institution on private sector advisory projects in emerging markets is an advantage.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
  • Hands-on experience conducting energy audits, baseline assessments, and feasibility studies for electrification and energy storage solutions in commercial or mixed-use real estate.
  • Proficiency in measuring, reporting, and reducing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions from real estate portfolios, with familiarity with the GHG Protocol and Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate net-zero or low-carbon transition strategies, including CapEx planning and payback period analysis.
  • Knowledge of on-site and off-site renewable energy options (solar PV, PPAs, RECs) and their applicability to real estate portfolios.
  • Familiarity with internationally recognized certification frameworks such as LEED, BREEAM, EDGE, or GRESB.
  • Ability to research and interpret jurisdiction-specific environmental regulations, energy codes, and sustainability disclosure requirements.
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
  • Strong quantitative and analytical capabilities, including the ability to model decarbonization scenarios and translate complex findings into actionable recommendations for non-technical audiences.
Stakeholder and Client Engagement
  • Demonstrated experience working with private sector clients, real estate developers, asset managers, or institutional investors.
  • Comfortable engaging across all levels, from site engineers to C-suite, on technically complex topics.
Teamwork and Multicultural Competence
  • Proven ability to work effectively in multicultural, multidisciplinary teams across different time zones and geographies.
  • Experience in emerging markets or developing country contexts is an advantage.
Communication Skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
  • Ability to produce high-quality technical reports, presentations, and client-facing deliverables.
  • Proficiency in an additional language relevant to IFC's operational regions would be an asset.
