Job summary

Northwell Health seeks an Emergency Department support professional to assist the ED team, prepare patients for exams, perform basic procedures, and help with transport and documentation. You will work under RN supervision in a fast-paced environment.

Required: EMT or Medical Assistant certification or nursing student status, plus CPR certification. Minimum one year of ED experience is preferred. Salary range is hourly with variety of shifts and duties in Danbury Hospital.

Summary

Assists the Emergency Department team by providing quality patient care, working under the direction and supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Prepares patients for exam, maintains communication with RN’s and ED Providers regarding patient status changes, transports patients to testing and other units, performs and documents phlebotomy, EKGs, blood sugars, bladder scans and other care as directed and within the scope of certifications and training, ensures patient satisfaction by providing constant communication with patients and their families, ensures treatment areas are appropriately stocked and equipment is available and in proper working order, works proactively with other team members to maintain department throughput.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of the treatment area, which includes checking and maintaining stock and supplies in their assigned areas.
  • Prepare patients for exam—undress patient, position for comfort, adhere to appropriate monitoring devices, assure appropriate supplies.
  • Perform tasks including vital signs, I&Os, EKGs, bladder scans, blood glucose, phlebotomy, sizing and use of durable medical equipment.
  • Work within a variety of care settings within the ED, collaborating with the RN and providers in those areas as an integral member of the team in the pod or area such as triage.
  • Participate as an active member with specific roles within the ED team in the care of complex patients (trauma, cardiac arrest, etc.): placing patients on monitors, setting up fluid warmers, pleurovac.
  • Perform hourly rounding and maintain regular communication with patients and their family members.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with team members regarding patient status, proactively managing care and any issues.
  • Document task completion and patient care interactions.
  • Transport patients to testing and in‑patient units.
  • Complete mandatory continuing education.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Fulfill all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Skills & Experience

Required: Current EMT, Medical Assistant certification, or Nursing student or 1‑year prior ED experience. CPR certification required.

Minimum Experience: One year.

Desired: Phlebotomy and EKG training; direct patient care skills.

Working Conditions

Manual: Significant manual skills, motor coordination and finger dexterity.

Occupational: Significant occupational risk.

Physical Effort: Medium to heavy effort; may exert up to 35 lbs. force.

Physical Environment: Some exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
