Job summary

X4 Engineering is seeking an experienced E&I Designer in Houston, TX to lead electrical, instrumentation and controls design on major capital projects, from concept through construction support. The role is office-based with occasional site visits.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years of industrial E&I design experience, strong knowledge of NEC, and hands-on experience with P&IDs, loop drawings, and control panel layouts. Associate degree in industrial technology or equivalent required.

Qualifications

• Strong working knowledge of NEC requirements and standards.
• Solid design skills including conduit/cable sizing, voltage drop, cable tray sizing, and motor control schematics.

We're working with a well-established EPC contractor that delivers capital projects across midstream, refining and industrial markets. They're hiring an experienced E&I Designer to lead electrical, instrumentation and controls design on major projects, from early design through to construction support.

What you'll be doing

• Leading E&I design on capital projects and producing complete, accurate deliverables to scope
• Designing MV and LV power distribution, controls, control system wiring, lighting and heat tracing
• Developing instrumentation installation details, location plans and control panel layouts
• Checking designs and deliverables for accuracy and completeness
• Supporting the construction team on E&I throughout the project
• Working closely with other disciplines to keep projects moving

What they're looking for

• 5+ years of industrial E&I design experience on process plant instrumentation and electrical power systems
• Good working knowledge of the NEC
• Solid electrical design skills: conduit and cable sizing, voltage drop calcs, cable tray sizing, hazardous area equipment selection, and motor control schematics and wiring
• Instrumentation design experience, including normal and energy-limited circuits
• Understanding of pneumatic, electronic and analytical instruments used to measure flow, temperature, pressure and level
• Comfortable working from P&IDs, loop drawings, wiring schematics and specs
• Associate degree in an industrial technology field, or equivalent experience

Nice to have

• Midstream gas plant or refinery experience
• Lighting and heat trace design
• Field experience

The role is office-based and mostly at a desk, with occasional site visits that involve walking the plant and laydown yards and carrying up to 50 lbs.
