Job summary

Akamai Technologies GmbH is looking for a DWDM Network Engineer II to grow and manage our optical transport layer across global sites. You will deploy, commission, and augment DWDM infrastructure, review OTDRs, and troubleshoot complex fiber deployments with field teams and vendors.

You will bring 5+ years of DWDM experience, multi-vendor expertise (Infinera, Nokia, Ciena, Cisco, Coriant), and strong Python/automation skills to streamline operations and improve reliability.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
• Deep multi-vendor expertise across optical platforms (Infinera, Nokia, Ciena, Cisco, Coriant).
• 5+ years hands-on experience building, operating, and troubleshooting production DWDM networks.
• Strong DWDM system design knowledge: EDFA/Raman, ROADM, link budgets, OSNR management.
• Expertise in reading OTDR traces and optical testing methodologies.
• Attention to detail with proven ability to follow procedures and runbooks.
• Ability to manage complex projects independently with minimal supervision.
• Experience using Python and AI-driven tools to automate tasks and accelerate root-cause analysis.

Responsibilities

• Deploying, commissioning, and augmenting DWDM infrastructure across global sites.
• Review OTDR traces, scope fiber, test insertion loss, and troubleshoot fiber plants.
• Collaborate with dark fiber providers, ISPs, and colocation vendors on new spans and fault resolution.
• Diagnose and resolve optical issues including OSNR drops and transponder faults.
• Serve as SME and escalation point for production network issues.
• Use Python/AI tools to automate workflows and accelerate deployments.
• Mentor junior engineers on optical testing and vendor platform management.
