Job summary

Western Veterinary Partners offers an externship program that lets veterinary students gain real-world experience by applying classroom knowledge in a clinical setting.

Externs work with supervising veterinarians, gain exposure to diverse practice types, and build professional networks. A $1,000 stipend is provided, with opportunities to explore small animal, mixed, dental, and other paths and potential post-graduation opportunities.

Qualifications

• Veterinary students in any grade may apply for an externship.
• Externship can be part of clinical year externship blocks or informal externship experience.
• Externs learn client communication, case management, and clinical procedures.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with supervising veterinarian across practice areas.
• Gather patient histories and perform physical exams.
• Review estimates and develop treatment plans.
• Observe/assist or perform in-house lab work and select procedures.
• Support overall medical management and client communication.

Veterinary Students in any grade can apply for an externship with a WVP Practice as part of their clinical year externship blocks or for informal externship experience.

What you will learn:

• Working closely with the supervising veterinarian you will gain experience in all areas of practice management including; client communication - gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, reviewing estimates; Ownership of cases by creating treatment plans, diagnostics, managing and performing in house labs; Observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures including dental procedures; and overall medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice learn communication skills, time management skills, fiscal responsibilities, record keeping, and relationship building with the medical team, support staff, and clients.*
