Job summary

Southeastern Vermont Community Action Inc (SEVCA) seeks a Benefits Assistor to help income-eligible individuals obtain and maintain public benefits in Windham and Windsor Counties. You will educate, enroll, and navigate Medicaid, SNAP, and other programs as part of SEVCA’s Family Services team.

The role involves travel within the two counties, coordinating with partners, and maintaining timely case documentation to support families moving beyond poverty.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Two years of experience in case management or related human services field.
  • Eligible to obtain Benefit Assistor certification through DVHA.
  • Knowledge of community resources and counseling/social work for high-risk populations.
  • Understanding of poverty, fair housing, and Vermont landlord/tenant law.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; bilingual abilities are a plus.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate documentation and protect confidentiality.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and standard computer/database applications.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse population, including landlords and social service providers.
  • Commitment to diversity and an inclusive working environment.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and maintain DVHA Benefit Assistor certification.
  • Provide education, enrollment assistance, and health insurance navigation for Medicaid and Vermont Health Connect.
  • Educate, enroll, and outreach for SNAP, Farm to Family Coupons, Crop Cash.
  • Assist clients with other benefits programs including fuel and utility assistance.
  • Serve as primary contact for clients with complex or ongoing needs.
  • Advocate for clients with agencies and coordinate with other SEVCA staff.
  • Meet households in homes and community locations; travel within counties as needed.
  • Refer clients to SEVCA supports and services.
  • Participate in team meetings, QC initiatives, and community collaborations.
  • Maintain consistent data collection with Vermont 211 and other partners.
  • Maintain accurate case documentation.
