Job summary

CITY OF GALVESTON is seeking a Building Inspector to perform residential and commercial inspections, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal codes. The role involves plan reviews, permits, and reporting of violations.

The ideal candidate will understand building codes, provide technical assistance to contractors and the public, and contribute to safe, compliant construction across the City of Galveston.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent; AND three years’ experience in residential and commercial construction; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Licensed electrician preferred.
• Possession of a valid Texas driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Inspects buildings during and after construction to ensure compliance with building, energy, zoning, municipal and state codes and approved plans.
• Inspects mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work for code compliance.
• Ensures flood elevation criteria are implemented.
• Prepares reports and notices for violations; collaborates with City legal staff on interpretations.
• Provides technical assistance to the public and professionals regarding permitting and building processes.
• Reviews plans and issues permits; evaluates drawings for compliance with codes and safety laws.
