DSHS WSH Laboratory Technician 2 - Phlebotomist

Position Overview

At Western State Hospital, our patients rely on timely, accurate lab results as part of their treatment and recovery. As a Laboratory Technician 2, your work will support safe, informed care for individuals receiving inpatient mental health and psychiatric services.

Description

In this role, you will provide phlebotomy services, collect and process specimens, and perform laboratory tests. You’ll work with patients who may have complex health needs and collaborate with clinical staff to ensure results are clear, complete, and timely. You will also maintain equipment, troubleshoot minor issues, and support daily lab operations.

This position suits dependable, detail-oriented individuals committed to teamwork, technical skill, and compassionate care.

Pierce County employees may be eligible for an Orca Card for transportation. On-site work at least three days a week may qualify for an additional 5% premium pay.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Perform venipuncture and specimen collection procedures.
  2. Process, label, and track specimens per lab protocols.
  3. Conduct clinical tests and enter results into systems.
  4. Review and verify testing results before release.
  5. Operate, clean, and maintain lab equipment.
  6. Restock reagents and monitor inventory.
  7. Report critical or abnormal results to staff.
  8. Perform quality control procedures.
  9. Participate in training and ensure current procedures are followed.
Qualifications

Applicants should have a current Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy certificate and at least 6 months of phlebotomy experience.

Additionally, one of the following is required:

  • Two or more years of lab testing and specimen processing experience in a clinical or research setting, or
  • An associate's degree from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program including chemistry and biology courses, or
  • Completion of an approved laboratory assistant course by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
