Job summary

FedEx Freight is hiring in Hermiston, Oregon for a driver role operating tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles. The starting pay is $25.64 per hour, with duties ranging from long-haul driving to dock work and forklift operation.

You will perform safety inspections, log keeping, and adhere to DOT regulations while delivering and picking up trailers between service centers. The position requires a Class A CDL/CLP, a valid MVR, and the ability to lift and handle heavy loads multiple times

Qualifications

• Must possess a Class A CDL or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification.
• Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.
• Must meet all DOT regulatory requirements under 391 FMC Regulations.
• Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to hook up and break down trailers that require an average lift of ~100 pounds.
• Ability to sit for extended periods, bend, twist, squat, climb in/out of truck.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete required training.
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member.

Responsibilities

• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections.
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies.
• Maintain accurate daily logs.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Communicate with Dispatch and follow instructions.
• Comply with hazmat regulations and placarding requirements.
• Provide internal and external customer service.
• Perform duties of city driver or freight handler when needed.
• Operate freight handling equipment such as forklift and pallet jack.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Through education and driving skills development, become proficient in the operation of a tractor trailer combination, picking up and delivering trailers between service centers and/or turn-point locations. Responsibilities may include non-driving duties such as forklift operation and working the dock.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks
• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
• Maintain accurate daily logs
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports
• Communicate with and follow Dispatch instructions regarding events including, but not limited to, delays, arrivals, equipment problems, etc., as required
• Comply with hazardous material regulations and company procedures, and confirm placarding matches hazmat shipments, as required
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service
• Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a city driver or freight handler
• Where operationally necessary, perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including, but not limited to, forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck
• Chain vehicle tires, as required
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
• Perform other duties as required

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Drive long distances day and night on all types of roads in all types of weather

• Hours may vary due to operational need
• Overnight stays may be required for some schedules
