Summary

Reporting to the Transportation Manager, the Driver transports the student population from Pre‑K through college, ensuring a secure and supportive environment while maintaining high standards of professionalism, safety, and service.

Job Description
  • Safely operates a Class B commercial vehicle, including school buses and shuttle buses, to transport students across all educational levels.
  • Ensures the safe loading, unloading, and transport of students while maintaining a positive and professional environment.
  • Maintains strict adherence to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Conducts and documents pre‑trip and post‑trip vehicle inspections.
  • Maintains accurate logs and required transportation records.
  • Lifts and secures equipment, wheelchairs, and child safety seats as necessary.
  • Performs light mechanical tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Fuels buses and other campus vehicles to ensure fleet readiness.
  • Assists with minor vehicle upkeep, including topping off fluids (oil, coolant, windshield washer fluid) and jump‑starting vehicles when needed.
  • Operates golf carts, trucks, vans, and other vehicles for special events, campus tours, and equipment transportation.
  • Supports transportation needs for field trips, athletic competitions, and special collegiate events.
  • Maintains a clean and professional vehicle appearance, including performing quick sweeps of vehicles after each route to check for lost items.
  • Submits gas receipts, incident/accident reports, and other required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co‑workers and supervisors.
  • Demonstrates a genuine commitment to belonging in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under TitleIX; commits to completing TitleIX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
  • Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well‑being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents.
  • Performs related and other duties as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of three years of experience with driving buses, trucks, and school buses.
  • Class “B” or “C” CDL license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated driving record with no moving violations or points.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
Additional Job Details
  • The successful candidates must possess air brakes (except for the Small School Buses) and endorsements of (P) passengers and/or (S) school bus.
  • The successful candidate must be able to meet and maintain all DOT and institutional requirements, including physical examinations, drug and alcohol screenings, and background investigations.
  • The successful candidate must be able to move, lift and secure students and equipment upon entering and exiting the school bus and during emergency situations.
  • The successful applicants must possess the Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid or attain it within thirty days of hire.

  • The successful candidate will undergo a background check that must be cleared prior to working at Gallaudet University.
