Job Description

This position is open to internal and external candidates beginning in the 2026-2027 school year.

Position Overview

The Middle School Drama Director fosters student creativity, confidence, and collaboration through dramatic arts. This role involves directing student productions, managing technical aspects, and overseeing extracurricular drama activities such as clubs and workshops.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Direction

  • Select age-appropriate scripts for plays, balancing artistic merit and theatrical goals.
  • Cast, block, and rehearse productions; manage all performance elements including set, props, costumes, lighting, and sound.
  • Oversee technical teams (stage crew, lighting, sound) and coordinate the use of the auditorium or performance spaces.
  • Organize rehearsals and performances—including scheduling and budgeting.

Student Engagement & Leadership

  • Supervise and mentor students in productions, clubs, and creative workshops.
  • Encourage teamwork, self-expression, and artistic risk-taking in a supportive environment.

Collaboration & Community Outreach

  • Communicate program goals, rehearsal schedules, production updates, and opportunities to parents and school stakeholders.

Administration & Compliance

  • Manage budgets for costumes, royalties, equipment, and production needs; track receipts and expenditures.
  • Maintain accurate student records: attendance, grades, eligibility, and production participation.
  • Ensure safe rehearsal and performance environments, adhering to school policies and health & safety codes.

Professional Development

  • Stay current with theatre education best practices and emerging directorial approaches.
  • Participate in peer networks.
  • Mentor student leaders and, where applicable, aides and volunteers.
Qualifications

Experience & Skills

  • Vast experience in Theatre Arts, Drama, or Performing Arts.
  • Proven experience in directing productions.
  • Strong technical theatre know-how (lighting, sound, stage design, set construction).
