Job summary

RINA, a multinational leader in engineering and environmental services, seeks a Drainage Engineer to join its Chicago/Lisle, IL team. You will perform hydraulic analysis, develop drainage plans, and prepare technical memoranda compliant with client standards and regulations.

Collaboration with a multidisciplinary staff is essential. The role requires a Civil Engineering degree with hydrology emphasis and 2+ years of drainage experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a focus in hydrology and hydraulics.
  • 2+ years of drainage study/design experience.
  • EIT, PE license preferred.
  • Knowledge of MicroStation.
  • Familiarity with HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, EPA SWMM, and OpenDrainage a plus.
  • IDOT drainage design policies experience a plus.
  • Excellent technical communication skills (oral and written).
  • Willingness to learn and work independently or in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop drainage plans and profiles in MicroStation for roadway projects.
  • Identify drainage areas and drainage patterns.
  • Design proposed drainage systems for local roadways/highways.
  • Prepare drainage studies and hydraulic reports.
  • Prepare final drainage plans and specifications for drainage facilities.
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic calculations for culverts and storm sewers.
  • Coordinate with engineers and staff to ensure standards and code compliance.
  • Adhere to quality control policies and procedures.

Job description

RINA is currently recruiting for a Drainage Engineer to join its office in Chicago or Lisle, IL within the Environmental and Engineering Geoscience Division.

Compensation Data

$75,000 - $95,000 commensurate with education and experience

Mission

The Drainage Engineer is responsible for performing engineering design that is associated with traditional highway/roadway projects. The technical work may involve hydrology and hydraulic calculations/modeling, completing drainage technical memorandums, Location Drainage Studies, and development of drainage plans and profile sheets. The Engineer will report to the Drainage Manager and work with a team of staff engineers and technicians. The work is to be completed in compliance with owner/clients' (IL DOT, IL EPA, Chicagoland counties) standards and policies.

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop in MicroStation drainage plan and profile sheet traditionally associated with roadway reconstruction or rehabilitation projects.
  • Identify existing drainage areas and drainage patterns
  • Design proposed drainage systems for portions of local roadway, highways or interstates
  • Assist in the preparation of drainage studies including existing and proposed drainage plans, hydraulic reports, and Location Drainage Studies
  • Assist in the preparation of final engineering plans and specifications for drainage facilities including storm sewers systems, schedules, detention ponds, and water quality facilities
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic calculation for culvert and storm sewer sizing, including determining the hydraulic grade line and information traditionally included on the Waterway Information Table.
  • Coordinate with other engineers and support staff during plan development to ensure conformance to standards and code requirements
  • Responsible for adherence to quality control policies and procedures
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related with a focus in hydrology and hydraulics from an accredited university or college
  • 2+ years of professional drainage study/design work
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Professional Engineers License preferred
  • Knowledge of MicroStation
  • Familiarity with HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, EPA SWMM, and OpenDrainage a plus.
  • Work experience and knowledge of IDOT drainage design policies and procedures is a plus
  • Excellent technical communication skills (oral and written)
  • Willingness to learn and invest in professional development
  • Self-starter who can work independently or part of a multi-discipline team
Additional Qualifications
  • Ability to travel regionally for site visits and client meetings
  • Valid driver's license
