Job summary

Gulf Island is seeking a Material Planner to support production, overseeing material processes from procurement to BOM changes. You will work cross-functionally to drive material planning improvements and ensure on-time material delivery for fabrication projects.

The role requires reading blueprints, interpreting drawings, and performing take-offs. Proficiency with AutoCAD, Inventor, Fusion 360, and Bluebeam is beneficial, with office-based duties and site visits in Houma, LA.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or technical certificate in drafting or related field.
• Experience with drafting or material planning in fabrication or oil and gas preferred.
• Experience with AutoCAD and 3D modeling is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Prepare material take-offs from design drawings for estimating and procurement.
• Manage material processes and participate in material-related process improvements.
• Read and interpret blueprints including structural framing and piping isometrics.
• Derive measurements, angles, and quantities to fabricate structures.
• Coordinate BOM changes (engineering changes, lost/damaged materials) for visibility.
• Collaborate with Purchasing to ensure timely purchase orders.
• Perform periodic field visits and provide on-site technical support.
• Support QHS&E management through safe and environmental practices.
• Operate AutoCAD and related drafting software; work with Windows 11 environments.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

The Material Planner is responsible for supporting production. The functions of this position include management of the material process including expediting purchased parts, outsourced products, lost and damaged material etc.

Essential Functions

• Prepare material take offs using design drawings for estimating and procurement of materials purposes
• Manage the material process while working cross functionally on material related process improvement projects to ensure our success
• Read and interpret industry blueprints such as structural framing and piping isometrics
• Read and derive measurements, angles, dimensions, and quantity of material needed to fabricate a structure
• Ensure changes to the Bill of Materials (BOM), including engineering change, lost, damaged and transfered materials are given high visibility
• Work with Purchasing to ensure purchase orders are placed in a timely manner
• Perform periodic field visits and provide on-site technical support
• Participate in the Company's QHS&E Management System through quality performance, through actions that safeguard the environment and through actions that enhance health and safety in the workplace
• Operate handheld calculators, compass, scales, drafting tools, and a P.C./IBM compatible workstation with Windows 11, AutoCAD 2025 applications
• Perform other duties assigned by supervisor

Requirements

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals and a basic understanding of Trigonometry
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
• Basic understanding of drafting principles
• Must be able to multi-task
• Ability to read blueprints
• Must be able to reliably commute to office location in Houma, LA
• Must be able to pass pre-employment physical and drug screen
• Must be able to pass a background check

Desirable Experience And Training

• Associate's Degree or Certificate of Technical Studies in Drafting Technology or related field
• Experience in drafting or material planning within the Fabrication or Oil and Gas industry
• Experience in AutoCAD
• Experience in 3D modeling

Environmental Conditions

This role is within an office environment. 20% percent of the work activities are performed outside, within a fabrication yard environment conducting yard tours and jobsite visits. Individuals will be required to work in changes of temperature, hot, cold, humid, wet, and dry conditions, dust, mud, etc.
