Job summary

Piper Companies is seeking an experienced Drafter / Engineering Technician to support advanced defense engineering programs in Virginia. You will develop detailed 2D/3D CAD models, create manufacturing drawings, and maintain documentation for hardware development in a structured environment.

The role requires SolidWorks/Creo/AutoCAD proficiency, GD&T expertise, and the ability to read engineering specs. Onsite work in King George, VA with security clearance to Secret level preferred.

Job description

Piper Companies is seeking an experienced Drafter / Engineering Technician to support advanced engineering programs focused on the development, integration, and testing of complex defense systems. This role will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to create high-quality CAD models, technical drawings, and engineering documentation used throughout the product lifecycle. The ideal candidate has a strong background in mechanical drafting, 3D modeling, configuration management, and technical documentation, with experience supporting hardware development within a structured engineering environment.

Responsibilities of Drafter / Engineering Technician

• Develop detailed 2D and 3D CAD models for mechanical components, assemblies, wiring layouts, and support equipment.
• Create manufacturing, fabrication, and assembly drawings with accurate dimensions, tolerances, and material specifications.
• Apply GD&T principles to ensure design accuracy and manufacturability.
• Maintain and update technical drawings throughout design, testing, and production phases.
• Generate complete drawing packages to support prototype and production efforts.

Qualifications for Drafter / Engineering Technician

• Minimum of 7 years of drafting or engineering technician experience.
• Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, or AutoCAD.
• Strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Experience producing mechanical drawings and engineering documentation.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering specifications, drawings, and technical standards.
• Experience supporting hardware development or engineering design projects.
• Familiarity with configuration management and document control processes.
• Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work within cross-functional engineering teams.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
• High School Diploma or GED.

Compensation for the QA Automation Engineer

• $100,000-$130,000 Based on Experience
• Onsite
