Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Ensure satisfaction of all users of the department's services per standards.
  • Assist with loading/unloading supplies at blood drive sites.
  • Set up and break down equipment for blood drives.
  • Perform daily quality control prior to drives.
  • Perform donor screening to ensure eligibility per standards.
  • Perform all aspects of whole blood collections on drives and at donor center.
  • Prepare and label blood components and samples for testing.
  • Document donor records and data entry accurately, including deferrals.
  • Pack units for transport and prepare specimens for testing.
  • Perform blood component processing.
  • Assist with donor recruitment.
  • Manage inventory and organize donor care supplies.
  • Obtain appropriate blood specimens from donors.
  • Perform therapeutic phlebotomy as needed.
  • Maintain clean, safe work areas and comply with policies.
  • Stay updated on policies and safety plans.
  • Support supervisors and pathologist with QA and instrument calibration.
  • Pursue professional growth through seminars and affiliations.
  • Provide service excellence to patients, visitors and staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description


  1. 1. Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the department's services, internal and external according to the hospital's customer service standards.

  2. 2. Makes recommendations for workflow practices, improvements in quality and/or efficiency to the immediate supervisor.

  3. 3. Assist with unloading and loading supplies and equipment to and from blood drive sites.

  4. 4. Set up equipment at beginning of blood drive and breakdown equipment at the end of the blood drive.

  5. 5. Performs daily quality control prior to the start of the blood drive.

  6. 6. Performs donor screening to ensure donor's eligibility per CCHC, CDC, FDA, AABB, and CAP standards.

  7. 7. Performs all aspects of whole blood collections on offsite blood drives and in donor center.

  8. 8. Prepares and labels blood components and samples for testing.

  9. 9. Performs accurate documentation on all blood donor records and data entry including donor deferrals into the computer system and ensures all quality control standards are met.

  10. 10. Packs units in transport cooler with ice and packs samples for testing for driver/courier to bring to donor center.

  11. 11. Performs blood component processing.

  12. 12. Assists with donor recruitment.

  13. 13. Performs daily inventory and packs required donor care supplies in totes for blood drives. Picks up supplies from donor center as needed. Sends a list of supplies to be ordered to the Supervisor or designee.

  14. 14. Obtains appropriate blood specimens from donors and patients.

  15. 15. Performs therapeutic phlebotomy in the donor center as needed.

  16. 16. Maintains workbenches, testing areas and other work areas in a clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition for the safety of patients, guests and staff.

  17. 17. Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans.

  18. 18. Assists Section Supervisors and Pathologist in maintaining programs including but not limited to: quality control, instrument calibration, quality assurance an improvement and development of new methodologies.

  19. 19. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

  20. 20. Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.

  21. 21. Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested.


Donor Care Specialist – Grade S10A, Job Code: 8255


  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.

  • Minimum of High School Diploma/GED or higher.

  • Meet one of the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1 year of phlebotomy experience.

  • Minimum 6 months of experience as a donor phlebotomist.

  • Working knowledge of blood groups and Rh types and donation procedures.

  • Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and to work under pressure.

  • (Preferred) National Certification or completion of an accredited phlebotomy program.

  • (BLS) - Basic Life Support certification (obtain within 90 days of position start, offered within).

  • Proficiency in using computers/laptops.

  • (PBT or DPT) – PBT Certification through either NHA or ASCP, which must be maintained, or Current Donor Phlebotomy (DPT) certification with American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), if already obtained prior to June 2024. Certification can be obtained within the first 12 months of hire.
