Manager, Transportation will ensure a Transportation department culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagements with drivers, best in-class service to customers, and safe and profitable operations. They will use their experience in transportation operations to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation operations through the associates they lead, ensuring the safe, accurate and timely daily outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible to participate in a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship position in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Safety Leadership: Lead with a safety mindset that ensures injury-free interactions with associates, customers, and the public. Champion safety procedures, processes, and training to create a safety-first culture.
  2. Team Development: Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, and performance discussions. Ensure proper training in job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Performance Management: Discuss performance with senior managers, create improvement plans, and review performance to meet safety and service targets.
  4. Communication and Motivation: Foster an environment of open communication, motivate team members, and promote US Foods values.
  5. Supervision and Engagement: Direct work and productivity, drive engagement and retention, and participate in hiring processes.
  6. Operational Oversight: Monitor production goals, troubleshoot delivery issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  7. Process Improvement: Identify waste, improve safety and efficiency processes, and conduct safety and driver meetings.
  8. Compliance and Safety: Maintain driver qualification files, investigate accidents, and implement preventative measures.
  9. Scheduling: Effectively schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  10. Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned by the manager.
Supervision and Relationships

Supervision: Direct union and/or non-union drivers.

Internal Relationships: Collaborate with transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse leaders, and other departments.

External Relationships: Interact with customers.

Work Environment

Primarily on the road, spending time in trucks and an office environment, exposed to noise and vibration levels.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interpret operational data and basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10% travel required for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity.

Compensation

Range between $55,000 and $90,000, depending on experience, skills, location, and other factors.
