Manager, Transportation

The Manager of Transportation will foster a culture centered on people, safety, service, and cost efficiency through meaningful engagement with drivers, providing best-in-class service to customers, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their experience in transportation operations to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation processes, ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible to participate in a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship position in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Safety Leadership: Lead with a safety mindset, ensuring injury-free interactions among associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, processes, and training to cultivate a safety-first culture.
  2. Team Development: Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, and leading by example. Ensure all team members are trained in their duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Performance Management: Discuss performance with senior managers, create development plans, and address gaps. Review performance, coach on service and safety, and manage disciplinary actions.
  4. Communication and Motivation: Foster an environment of open communication and motivate team members to achieve departmental goals.
  5. Operational Oversight: Supervise work and productivity, monitor production goals, and ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction. Troubleshoot delivery issues and implement cost-effective solutions, ensuring compliance with DOT regulations.
  6. Process Improvement: Identify waste, improve processes for safety and efficiency, and conduct safety and driver meetings. Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files and investigate accidents to prevent future incidents.
  7. Scheduling: Effectively schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  8. Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the manager.
Supervision and Relationships

Supervision: Direct union and/or non-union drivers.

Internal Relationships: Collaborate with transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse leaders, and other departments such as sales.

External Relationships: Interact with customers.

Work Environment

May spend significant time on the road, in trucks with drivers, exposed to noise and vibration. Also spend time in an office working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year of experience overseeing a workforce.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10% travel required for meetings and training.

Education and Training
  • High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity for specified durations.

Compensation varies based on experience, skills, location, and other factors. The expected base salary range is $55,000 - $90,000.
