Manager, Transportation will ensure a Transportation department culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagements with drivers, best in-class service to customers, and safe and profitable operations. They will use their experience in transportation operations to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation operations through the associates they lead, ensuring the safe, accurate and timely daily outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible to participate in a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship position in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Safety Leadership: Lead with a safety mindset to ensure injury-free interactions among associates, customers, and the public. Champion safety procedures, processes, and training to foster a safety-first culture.
  2. Team Development: Oversee and develop drivers and Transportation associates through coaching, training, and performance discussions. Ensure proper training on job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Performance Management: Discuss performance with senior managers, create improvement plans, and address gaps.
  4. Communication and Motivation: Encourage upward communication and motivate team members to achieve goals.
  5. Supervision: Direct and supervise drivers and clerical staff, focusing on engagement, retention, and embodying company values.
  6. Team Building: Participate in hiring processes, review performance, and provide coaching and disciplinary actions as needed.
  7. Operational Oversight: Monitor production, ensure accuracy, troubleshoot issues, and adhere to DOT regulations.
  8. Process Improvement: Identify waste, improve processes, and conduct safety meetings.
  9. Safety and Compliance: Oversee maintenance of driver files, investigate accidents, and implement preventative measures.
  10. Scheduling: Effectively schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  11. Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned by the manager.
Supervision

Direct: Union and/or non-union Drivers

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse and sales teams; External: Customers

Work Environment

Primarily on the road and in trucks, with time spent in an office. Must tolerate noise and vibration levels typical of truck environments.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations and safety regulations.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret operational data and basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10%, primarily for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, lifting, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity tasks.

Compensation

Range between $55,000 - $90,000, depending on experience, skills, location, and other factors.
