Manager, Transportation will ensure a Transportation department culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagements with drivers, best in-class service to customers, and safe and profitable operations. They will use their experience in transportation operations to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation operations through the associates they lead, ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely daily outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible to participate in a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship position in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Lead with a safety mindset that ensures that every US Foods associate, our customers, and the general public with whom our drivers interact remain injury free, always. Champion safety procedures, processes, and training to create and maintain a safety-first culture in the Transportation department.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and Transportation associates through coaching, training, assisting in problem resolution, and leading by example. Ensure all drivers and associates are trained in job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Discuss performance with Sr. Transportation Managers and create plans to address gaps.
  4. Create an atmosphere encouraging upward communication and motivate associates to achieve department goals and objectives.
  5. Supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical associates, drive engagement and retention, and embody US Foods values.
  6. Participate in interviewing and hiring Transportation personnel, review performance, coach on targets, and deliver disciplinary actions.
  7. Monitor production goals, ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction, troubleshoot delivery problems, and ensure adherence to DOT regulations.
  8. Identify waste, improve processes, conduct safety and driver meetings, oversee maintenance of driver qualification files, and investigate accidents to prevent future incidents.
  9. Effectively schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel and perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision

Direct: Union and/or non-union Drivers

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, coworkers, drivers, warehouse leaders, internal departments (e.g., Sales). External: Customers.

Work Environment

May spend significant time on the road, exposed to noise and vibrations. Also spend time in an office working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications

Related Experience/Requirements:

  • Minimum of three years in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • Minimum of one year overseeing a workforce.
  • Experience as a driver is a plus.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Broad knowledge of transportation/delivery operations.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office).
Travel

10% travel required for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Must perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity tasks.

Compensation

Depends on experience, education, skills, location, and other factors. The expected base rate is between $55,000 - $90,000.
