Manager, Transportation

The Manager of Transportation will foster a culture focused on safety, service, people, and cost efficiency. They will engage meaningfully with drivers, ensure top-tier service to customers, and oversee safe, profitable operations. Using their transportation operations experience, they will manage personnel and drive operational efficiency to ensure safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Safety Leadership: Promote a safety-first culture, ensuring injury-free interactions among associates, drivers, customers, and the public. Champion safety procedures, training, and compliance.
  2. Team Development: Coach and develop drivers and transportation associates through training, performance discussions, and leading by example. Ensure all team members are trained in safety, legal, and operational responsibilities.
  3. Performance Management: Discuss performance with senior managers, create improvement plans, and address gaps.
  4. Communication and Motivation: Foster open communication and motivate staff to meet department goals.
  5. Supervision: Oversee work and productivity of drivers and clerical staff, driving engagement and embodying company values.
  6. Team Building: Participate in hiring, review performance, coach, and address disciplinary issues.
  7. Operational Oversight: Monitor goals, ensure accuracy, troubleshoot delivery issues, and maintain compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Process Improvement: Identify waste, streamline processes, and enhance safety and efficiency.
  9. Safety Meetings & Compliance: Conduct safety meetings, oversee driver qualification files, and investigate accidents to implement preventative measures.
  10. Scheduling: Plan shifts using appropriate tools like Microsoft Excel.
  11. Other duties as assigned.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse staff, sales, and other departments.
External: Customers.

Work Environment

Time on the road, exposure to noise and vibration, and time in an office on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • One year of supervisory experience.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations.
  • Leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to analyze operational data.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Travel

Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities like driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity for specified durations.

Compensation

Range between $55,000 and $90,000, depending on experience, skills, location, and other factors.
