Main Purpose of Job
Join us in making a difference at DJS! The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer communities, and fostering equitable systems. We are seeking passionate individuals for the role of DJS Facility Cook I to make a meaningful impact on youth and the community.
The main purpose of this position is to prepare and cook food according to the Food Service Administrator/Manager and DJS menus, using standardized recipes and production sheets, while adhering to food safety and sanitation requirements established by HACCP-based standard operating procedures. Maintenance of kitchen and work area in a clean and orderly manner is required. As needed, the cook may act as direct care staff and assist in staff support calls or watch youth. This role ensures the provision of safe, nutritious meals for youth housed at a residential program.
Key Responsibilities:
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education, as described in Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulations.
Experience: One year of experience cooking, baking, or preparing large quantities of food in a restaurant, institutional, or military setting. Experience in a fast-food or short-order cooking does not qualify.
Notes: 1. The educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission. 2. Military service experience in Food Services may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
