Main Purpose of Job

Join us in making a difference at DJS! The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer communities, and fostering equitable systems. We are seeking passionate individuals for the role of DJS Facility Cook I. This position will play a vital role in supporting the health and well-being of youth in a structured and nurturing environment. You will provide safe, nutritious meals and support staff and youth as needed, helping create a positive and supportive atmosphere aligned with our mission.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  1. Prepare and Cook Meals: Create meals using provided recipes and menus while following food safety and sanitation standards to ensure nutritious and high-quality dishes.
  2. Maintain a Clean and Organized Space: Keep the kitchen and work areas tidy and safe, fostering a welcoming and efficient environment.
  3. Provide Support When Needed: Assist staff, respond to support calls, and supervise youth as required, promoting a collaborative and caring atmosphere.
  4. Ensure Smooth Meal Service: Deliver meals to the serving line, monitor food supplies during service, and help ensure everyone receives meals efficiently and on time.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: One (1) year of experience cooking, baking, or preparing large quantities of food in a restaurant, institutional, or military setting. Experience in a fast-food restaurant or as a short-order cook does not qualify.

Notes:

  • The educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in Food Services classifications on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
Desired or Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate may possess:

  • Three (3) years of experience in food preparation in an institutional setting.
  • Possession of a ServSafe Certification or equivalent food safety certification.
  • One (1) year of experience working in the Federal Child Nutrition Program or similar.
Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications
  • Must obtain certification by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle with a valid Maryland driver’s license.
Special Requirements
  • Must meet minimum qualifications as established by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission, including background checks, fingerprinting, drug testing, and examinations.
  • May be subject to 24-hour call and substance abuse testing.
