Job description

Description

The University of Virginia Department of Anesthesiology is seeking a Division Chief for Pediatric Anesthesiology. The open position requires the applicant to have served in an academic faculty role as a pediatric anesthesiologist for at least 3 years and possess significant leadership experience.

The Division Chief will promote excellence in perioperative care for pediatric surgery or procedures across all clinical locations. Responsibilities include maintaining and improving the quality and efficiency of anesthesia services, creating and executing a vision for the division aligned with the department’s and UVA Health’s missions, and ensuring faculty development and mentorship opportunities.

Reporting:

The division chief reports to the Chair, Executive Vice Chair, Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, and other vice chairs of the Department of Anesthesiology. The section chief for Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia reports to the Division Chief.

Responsibilities:

  1. Design protocols to optimize pediatric anesthesia procedures.
  2. Collaborate with nursing leadership, surgeons, and proceduralists to ensure workflow efficiency.
  3. Develop and maintain a pediatric sedation service in collaboration with related departments.
  4. Address quality concerns related to pediatric anesthesia.
  5. Attend over 65% of monthly departmental leadership meetings.
  6. Lead regular division meetings (at least 6 per year) to discuss clinical, educational, academic, and community engagement opportunities.
  7. Work with the residency director and Vice Chair for Education to meet educational goals and maintain a didactic curriculum.
  8. Mentor division faculty and report on their progress for reappointments and promotions.
  9. Nominations for awards should be coordinated with the Vice Chair for Faculty Development.
  10. Promote the division’s academic mission and representation at national meetings.
  11. Participate in annual faculty evaluations, providing feedback on contributions to clinical care, education, research, and community engagement.
  12. Ensure billing compliance and collaborate to maximize billing and collections.
  13. Assist in workforce planning and recruiting new faculty.
  14. Partner in developing orientation programs for new faculty.
  15. Foster ASPIRE values and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the division.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have an MD or equivalent, completed an anesthesiology residency and pediatric anesthesiology fellowship, and be ABAn certified or certification-eligible. The position requires at least 3 years in an academic faculty role as a pediatric anesthesiologist and significant leadership experience.
