Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a District Special Projects Engineer to oversee a field construction office and manage highway and bridge projects in the assigned district.

You will monitor contractor schedules and budgets, resolve issues, coordinate utility relocations, and maintain daily work plans while liaising with county and municipal officials and the public. Travel and lifting up to 50 lbs may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management.
• Five years of engineering or construction management experience.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel; physical requirements listed.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities

Serves as District Special Projects Engineer providing oversight of field construction office consisting of consultants, engineers and technicians. Manages inspection of multiple highway and bridge construction projects within assigned area. Works to ensure assigned projects are being delivered to contract and Departmental requirements. Works to resolve arising projects/issues on assigned projects. Provides daily oversight, plans, and coordinates daily project work schedules for assigned projects, engaged in the insp ection and surveying of roadway and bridge construction projects. Establishes and monitors work processes. Implements management policies and initiatives, and promotes teamwork within the organization. Coordinates the moving of utilities in conflict with construction of roadways and bridges, ensuring proper alignment and elevation in relocation. Re presents SCDOT at public hearings and serves as liaison with various county and municipal officials; answers inquires of the general public. Monitors the contractor schedule on assigned projects. M onitors the budget on all construction projects. Controls the costs of projects through close monitoring of processes on projects and innovative engineering techniques. Researched contracts for the determination of applicable specifications for asphalt quality assurance purposes. Reads and interprets contract plans, gathers data to project number of adequate samples that will be required for the entire project. P repares, reviews, and submits the necessary documentation, in a timely manner, to close out projects. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and five (5) years of engineering or construction management work experienc e; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
• A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
