Job summary

The Chief District Public Defender leads the administrative and service delivery efforts for the Tenth Judicial District in Minnesota, overseeing 137 staff and 90 attorneys with offices in Anoka and satellite sites. The role sets policies consistent with the State Public Defender and manages statewide district relations.

Qualifications

• Admission to the Bar of Minnesota.
• Five years’ experience as a practicing attorney in criminal law.
• Prior administrative experience.

Responsibilities

• Supervise district employees and offices.
• Hiring, disciplining or the termination of employees under supervision.
• Supervises and evaluates the work of attorneys and support personnel.
• Responds to inquiries from the public concerning district activities.
• Responds to complaints from clients and resolves complaints.
• Assigns cases to ensure even workload distribution.
• Addresses court scheduling issues and conflict assignments.
• Interviews, trains, mentors and evaluates staff.
• Maintains liaison with court administration and judges.
• Undertakes related duties as required by the Board of Public Defense or State Public Defender.
• Coordinates with other Chief District Public Defenders on policy issues.
