Job summary

MINNESOTA STATE PUBLIC DEFENDER seeks a Chief District Public Defender to lead the administration of public defense services for the Tenth Judicial District, including Anoka and satellite offices. The role directs 137 staff, 90 attorneys, and a multi-county operation with a four-year term.

The position requires overseeing case distribution, policy coordination, and service delivery across eight counties in Minnesota.

Qualifications

• Admission to the Bar of Minnesota
• Five years’ experience as a practicing attorney in criminal law
• Prior administrative experience

Responsibilities

• Supervise district employees and offices
• Hire, discipline or terminate employees under supervision
• Supervise and evaluate attorneys and support personnel
• Respond to inquiries from the public about the district office
• Handle complaints and resolve client issues
• Assign cases to balance workload across the district
• Coordinate with court administration and judges on policy issues
• Collaborate with other Chief District Public Defenders and State Public Defender on policy matters
