The North Carolina Forest Service is seeking a District Mechanic in Fayetteville, NC to maintain and repair heavy equipment, diagnose complex mechanical issues, including diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and undercarriage components.

You will use repair manuals and schematics, perform irrigation equipment repair, welding and metal fabrication, and support forestry operations with reliable equipment. Normal hours 8-5; emergency readiness and some travel are required.

The NC Forest Service provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina. The primary job functions of this position are: • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment, as well as trouble shoots complex mechanical problems including diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, final drives, hydraulics, brakes and undercarriage problems. • Will need to use and comprehend repair manuals and schematics. • Provide irrigation equipment repair including electric, PTO and engine driven pumps as well as repair and maintain specialized forestry equipment and will also provide welding and metal fabrication. Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests, hunters, intense heat, dust and smoke. Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri. Some work functions require evening, holiday and/or weekend work. Wildfire & disaster/emergency response functions require readiness 24/7. Some overnight travel required for emergency response and/or training. Residency will be discussed at the time of interview. Duty Station Location: 221 Airport Road Fayetteville, NC Employee must operate a state vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training or employer sponsored training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
