Job summary

Williamsburg James City School District is seeking a Coordinator of Elementary Literacy to lead the planning, development, and continuous improvement of the elementary literacy program in the division. You will ensure research-based curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning meet diverse learner needs.

The role emphasizes leadership, collaboration with reading specialists and teachers, and data-driven program enhancements to support literacy outcomes across K–5.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in reading, literacy, curriculum and instruction, educational leadership, or a related field.
• Valid teaching license with Reading Specialist certification/endorsement.
• Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience, including substantial experience in elementary literacy or English language arts.
• Administrative or supervisory certification is preferred; candidates actively pursuing such certification may be considered.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in organizing, facilitating, and working effectively with individuals and groups.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear, concise reports and presentations for varied audiences.
• Proficiency with instructional technology, assessment platforms, productivity tools, and data-management systems.

Responsibilities

• Develops, evaluates, and revises the division’s elementary English language arts curriculum and literacy model using current research, standards, and needs.
• Develops and maintains curriculum frameworks, scope and sequence documents, goals, objectives, and resources with stakeholders.
• Ensures articulation within elementary grades and supports a coherent K–12 literacy program.
• Coordinates curriculum projects, publications, meetings, and committees related to elementary literacy.
• Communicates approved curriculum and instructional expectations and maintains documentation.
• Plans, facilitates, and evaluates needs-based professional learning to strengthen literacy instruction.
• Organizes collaboration with reading specialists, literacy coaches, and teachers.
• Supports classroom instruction through observations, feedback, modeling, and appropriate materials and technology.
• Recommends adaptations to meet diverse literacy needs including DL, multilingual learners, and intervention.
• Coordinates selection, development, implementation, and review of literacy assessments.
• Provides training on literacy assessments to staff.
• Analyzes reading and writing data to guide improvement efforts.
• Leads adoption processes for textbooks and materials.
• Supports interviews and assessments for literacy-related positions.
