Job summary

The Department of Fire Services in Stow, MA is seeking a District Engineering Inspector III to inspect boilers and pressure vessels and ensure compliance with state laws, ASME, NBIC, and manufacturer specs. The role involves tests, investigations, and issuing certificate decisions, with responsibilities including examiner duties for licenses and potential travel across Hampden and Hampshire counties.

This full-time position offers a hybrid work model and regular hours 7:00 a.m.

Qualifications

• Current and valid First Class Stationary Engineers License issued by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services (A) and one of: National Association of Amusement Rides Safety Officials (NAARSO) certification.
• Current and valid National Board Commission or ability to obtain a Commission within two years of hire.
• Incumbents may be required to possess a valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.

Responsibilities

• Conducts inspections of boilers and pressure vessels to ensure safety standards are met.
• Inspects materials, safety devices, piping, welding quality and calculations.
• Reviews repair methods, welding procedures, and witnesses hydrostatic tests.
• Performs tests such as ultrasonic and hydrostatic tests to verify condition of boilers.
• Confers with engineers and owners to correct nonconformance and violations.
• Maintains records and prepares summaries of inspections for legal use.
• Keeps knowledge updated on rules, policies, and codes (ASME, NBIC).
• Examiners for licenses and certifications as required by statute or regulation.
