Job summary

NY STATE ELECTRIC & GAS CORP seeks a Distribution Operator in Vestal, NY to coordinate outage switching, operate distribution facilities and dispatch electric/gas trouble notifications. You will perform analyses, lead switching operations, and ensure compliance with procedures.

The position requires a BA in Electrical Engineering or an AAS in Electrical Engineering Technology, plus aptitude testing and training completion. Salary is hourly, with strong emphasis on safety and reliability.

Qualifications

• Requires BA in Electrical Engineering or AAS in Electrical Engineering Technology with passing score on company-approved test.
• Absorb company training in Distribution Operating work and related topics, measured by job knowledge tests.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and create switching for outage testing under supervision, operate distribution facilities, and dispatch outage notifications.
• Issue switching orders for de-energizing, grounding, tagging and re-energizing facilities.
• Ensure compliance with Electric Switching and Tagging procedures and gas operation standards.
• Analyze distribution circuits for real-time and contingency operation.
• Lead distribution switching operations when assigned and oversee related activities.
• Operate supervisory distribution devices and log data; keep system diagrams updated.

• Coordinates/ creates switching for the outage of distribution lines and equipment for testing, Under directive supervision coordinates/operates the electric distribution facilities and dispatches electric and gas outage and trouble notifications. Typical maintenance and repairs to assure continuity of service in cooperation with Section Operators and Division operating personnel.
• Issues switching orders for de-energizing, grounding, tagging and re-energizing distribution facilities.
• Assures rigid observance of Electric Switching and Tagging Procedures and standard procedures for gas operations.
• Performs required analyses of distribution circuits to ensure proper distribution circuit operation in real-time and for contingency conditions.
• Makes initial analysis of electric outage/trouble and initiates actions to minimize interruptions.
• Oversees overall distribution switching operations in a lead role when assigned.
• Operates and monitors supervisory controlled electric distribution devices.
• Logs data and keeps records up to date.
• Updates system diagrams and programs to conform with current field conditions.
• Receives electric/gas trouble and outage calls and dispatches crews via the Outage Management System.
• Recognizes unusual conditions and situations and informs responsible Corporate or Division operating personnel.
• Performs other related or less skilled work as required.

Skills And Requirements

• BA in Electrical Engineering / AAS in Electrical Engineering Technology or a passing score on a test designed by the Company or a provider approved by the Company.
• Successful completion of Company administered aptitude test.
• Will be expected to absorb Company training in Distribution Operating work, measured by appropriate job knowledge tests. This includes general knowledge of the operation of generating stations, transmission and distribution lines, substations, gas distribution systems, geography of Company territory, Company Safety Rules, Switching and Tagging Procedures , protection systems, and standard procedures for gas operations.
