Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Journey-level technical/field experience as a substation electrician (Instructor III: 4-7 years; Instructor IV: 8-12 years; Instructor V: 12+ years).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of transmission/distribution systems, construction standards, electrical equipment, and safe work practices.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, NESC, NEC, and NFPA 70E requirements.
  • Ability to climb structures, work at heights, operate equipment, and perform field skills in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid Class A CDL or ability to obtain one.
  • Strong communication, presentation, coaching, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver technical training for apprentices, journey-level substation electricians, and utility personnel.
  • Instruct on OSHA, NESC, NEC, NFPA 70E and company safety policies.
  • Demonstrate and supervise climbing, rigging, tool use, bucket trucks, aerial lifts, equipment operation, and field construction activities.
  • Evaluate trainee performance through written assessments, practical demonstrations, and field observations.
  • Coach and mentor employees with individualized, constructive feedback.
  • Develop lesson plans, maintain training records, and update curriculum as technologies evolve.
  • Collaborate with instructors and operational leaders to maintain high-quality training programs.
  • Support safety initiatives, workforce development projects, field observations, and storm restoration efforts.

This role focuses on developing technical expertise, safe work practices, and professional standards across electric utility operations.

Distribution Instructor (Substation Electrician) Responsibilities
  • Deliver technical training covering substation construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, electrical theory, system operations, and work methods.
  • Provide instruction on OSHA, NESC, NEC, NFPA 70E, company safety policies, hazard recognition, and utility industry best practices.
  • Demonstrate and supervise climbing, rigging, tool use, bucket trucks, aerial lifts, equipment operation, and field construction activities.
  • Evaluate trainee performance through written assessments, practical demonstrations, and field observations.
  • Coach and mentor employees while providing individualized, constructive feedback.
  • Develop lesson plans, maintain training records, and update curriculum as technologies and industry standards evolve.
  • Collaborate with instructors and operational leaders to maintain consistent, high-quality training programs.

Distribution Instructor (Substation Electrician) Qualifications
Critical Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Journey-level technical/field experience as a substation electrician:
    • Instructor III: 4-7 years
    • Instructor IV: 8-12 years
    • Instructor V: 12+ years
  • Comprehensive knowledge of transmission/distribution systems, construction standards, electrical equipment, and safe work practices.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, NESC, NEC, and NFPA 70E requirements.
  • Ability to climb structures, work at heights, operate applicable equipment, and demonstrate field skills in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid Class A CDL or ability to obtain one.
  • Strong communication, presentation, coaching, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous trainer, instructor, mentor, or field crew leadership experience.
  • Technical training, instructional training, or adult education certification.
  • Familiarity with FirstEnergy work methods, equipment, and safety standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, and training software.
Distribution Instructor (Substation Electrician) Working Conditions

This position combines classroom, training-yard, and field environments and requires frequent standing, walking, climbing, and outdoor work. Travel to company or remote sites may be required up to 25% of the time.
