Position
Distribution Engineer – Austin, TX (hybrid). The role may be remote within Texas. Primary responsibilities center on electric utility distribution system design, analysis, planning, protection, and consulting.
Responsibilities
- Apply the National Electrical Safety Code to provide strength and clearance calculations for design of electrical distribution facilities (overhead and underground).
- Perform construction inspection using the same tools and standards.
- Utilize distribution system analysis software to evaluate steady-state and transient conditions, develop long-range and capital construction planning studies, and perform protective coordination studies.
- Contribute to other distribution engineering services, including power quality reviews, reliability, distribution automation, smart grid, and communications.
- Review designs completed by other distribution engineers or designers.
- Mentor and lead less experienced distribution designers and engineers.
- Assume project lead responsibilities, including meeting production targets, budgets, and project deliverables.
- Assist in marketing opportunities with key clients and respond to RFPs/RFQs as needed.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of increasing responsibility in the electrical utility market.
- Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
- Registered Professional Engineer in Texas or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team setting.
- Strong motivation for success and willingness to take on increasing responsibilities.
- Working knowledge of distribution construction standards and the National Electric Safety Code.
- Familiarity with USDA Rural Utilities Services design bulletins and lending program requirements for planning and design.
- Proficiency in design, construction, and maintenance practices of electrical distribution systems; ability to recognize constructability concerns.
- Experience reviewing designs completed by others in the team.
- Ability to mentor and lead less experienced designers and engineers.
- Ability to assume project lead responsibilities, including production targets, budgets, and deliverables.
- Ability to support business development efforts and respond to client opportunities.
