Job summary

Temporal is seeking a Software Engineer II to join the Open Source Server team. You will design, implement, and operate components of Temporal’s core server, working across matching, scheduling, persistence, and workflow features.

This hands-on role involves collaborating with experienced engineers to improve reliability, performance, and developer experience across the distributed system. You’ll work with teammates to design scalable solutions, contribute to open source projects, and help drive

Qualifications

• Production backend systems experience with distributed systems and concurrency.
• Strong CS fundamentals: concurrency, data structures, debugging.
• Production-quality Go or Java code, emphasis on correctness and maintainability.
• Familiarity with distributed systems concepts (fault tolerance, replication, scheduling).
• Ability to break down ambiguous problems and incorporate feedback from code review.
• Comfort working across teams and communicating progress, risks, and tradeoffs.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, and ship features for the Temporal server.
• Work on distributed systems problems across core areas (matching, scheduling, persistence).
• Balance tradeoffs between developer experience, performance, and operability.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, cloud teams, and customers.
• Improve reliability with tests, instrumentation, dashboards, alerts, and docs.
• Participate in design discussions and code reviews to uphold code quality.
• Contribute to open source user and enterprise customer improvements and fixes.
• Share knowledge and foster a collaborative engineering culture.
