Job summary

Disability Rights New York (DRNY) Albany seeks a Staff Attorney to provide legal services, represent individuals and pursue systemic litigation. The role reports to the PAIMI program and may involve other programs as needed. The position is estimated to last up to one year.

Key duties include investigating abuse, monitoring providers, and drafting reports. Travel across New York State and beyond may be required.

Qualifications

• Be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or eligible to waive in from another jurisdiction, or be eligible to become a member within a reasonable time after beginning employment, and maintain such standing throughout employment with DRNY.
• 0-5 years of experience.
• Demonstrated interest and commitment to public interest law.
• Ability to work efficiently, independently, and collaboratively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal services and engage in individual and systemic representation and litigation.
• Investigate allegations of abuse and draft investigative reports.
• Monitor service providers for abuse, neglect, and compliance with federal and state laws; draft monitoring reports.
• Analyze cases to identify systemic issues and help formulate strategies.
• Lead and support DRNY projects, teams, and initiatives fostering self-determination and advocacy.
• Lead task forces, coalitions, and committees; conduct training and outreach.
• Maintain accurate, confidential files and time/client records.
• Assist in preparing reports to funding sources.
• Travel within New York State and beyond as needed.
