Job summary

Disability Rights New York (DRNY) is seeking a Staff Attorney to provide legal services, engage in individual and systemic representation, and perform litigation tasks. The role reports to the PAIMI program initially and may shift to other programs as needed.

This position is estimated to last up to one year and may involve travel. The Staff Attorney will work remotely or in an office setting, handle a broad range of duties, and contribute to DRNY's mission to advocate for the civil rights of

Qualifications

  • Be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or eligible to waive in from another jurisdiction, or be eligible to become a member within a reasonable time after beginning employment, and maintain such standing throughout employment with DRNY.
  • Have 0-5 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to public interest law.
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently, and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Outstanding professionalism and ethical judgment.
  • Multilingual skills preferred.

  • Work and reside in New York State consistent with DRNY’s policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal, administrative, and other appropriate means of representation to people with disabilities to ensure the protection of their rights.
  • Investigate allegations of abuse and neglect and draft investigative reports.
  • Monitor service providers for abuse, neglect, and compliance with federal and state laws and draft monitoring reports.
  • Analyze cases to determine systemic issues and collaborate with Program Director on strategies for prevention or resolution.
  • Operate in line with Program priorities and goals; lead and support DRNY projects and coalitions.
  • Consult with professionals to identify options and barriers for individuals and groups.
  • Lead task forces, coalitions, and committees; conduct training and outreach.
  • Maintain confidential files and time/client records; use client tracking database.
  • Travel throughout New York State and outside as necessary to perform tasks.
