Job summary

Illinois Mutual is seeking an Underwriter Trainee to assist in underwriting individual disability income insurance applications under standard and substandard guidelines. You will work closely with Underwriting management and senior underwriters to learn the process and gain proficiency.

You will facilitate the sales process, gather information from the field when needed, and may be authorized to approve applications within approved limits as you progress. This role is hybrid in Peoria, IL.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or Illinois Mutual approved equivalency required.
• Degree preferably in Insurance, Risk Management, Accounting, Finance or similar discipline.
• Strong service-oriented work ethic to understand, anticipate and satisfy customer business needs.
• Excellent communication (written and verbal), analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Goal oriented, results driven, accountable and reliable.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate the sales process while underwriting application files by ensuring reasonable and timely underwriting decisions within established service level objectives.
• As directed, may have contact with the field force to gather information on which to base decisions.
• May be granted authority to approve applications up to specific standards (or better) and substandard limits.
• Submits for review by superiors those applications requiring higher ratings or amounts in excess of prescribed limits.
• Learn about the Disability insurance industry, the Company, its products, services, underwriting and the position.
• Timely, consistent and progressive assimilation of the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve a level of self-sufficiency warranting promotion to the position of Underwriter.
• Comply with applicable rules procedures, regulations and laws
• Attend meetings and complete specific underwriting related projects as directed
