Job summary

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in Maine seeks a Disability Claims Adjudicator for the Disability Determination Services in Winthrop. You will review initial, reconsideration, and continuing disability claims and determine eligibility for SSA benefits under federal rules.

You will collect medical and vocational evidence, collaborate with physicians and psychologists, and draft detailed determinations Remote work is possible up to 3 days per week after initial 8–12 months.

Qualifications

• Intermediate education, training, and/or experience in research, data analysis, and/or development of comprehensive reports.
• REAL ID compliant identification is required.
• Ability to handle complex medical information, vocational policies, and ongoing technologies.
• Strong time management and attention to detail with a focus on accuracy.

Responsibilities

• Review and analyze initial, reconsideration, and continuing disability claims for Social Security benefits.
• Contact claimants, treating providers, and other approved contacts to obtain medical and vocational evidence.
• Determine eligibility for disability benefits according to federal regulations and complete written disability determinations.
• Authorize and arrange for medical and psychiatric examinations as needed to comply with program requirements.
• Write detailed letters to claimants, medical consultants, and agencies to explain decisions and findings.
• Assist in maintaining statistical data by coding decisions and handling related tasks.
• Participate in quality assurance, mentoring, and other special projects as assigned.
