Job description

Director, Volunteer Programs and Fulfillment Centers

Met Council is America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. Met Council’s ten departments are staffed by experts who help over 350,000 clients annually and continuously advocate for all needy New Yorkers. Our holistic programs range from 100% affordable housing at 20 locations to our award-winning family violence program to comprehensive Holocaust survivor assistance to senior programming to crisis intervention to the largest free kosher food distribution program in the world. Our network of 101 food pantries, 20 affordable housing sites, and 15 JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York.

Position Summary:

The Volunteer Services Department advances Met Council’s development and engagement goals by creating meaningful opportunities for key stakeholders to connect with the organization’s mission. Through hands‑on volunteer experiences and community engagement initiatives, the department deepens relationships with existing supporters while creating pathways for new stakeholders to become more meaningfully involved with Met Council. By aligning organizational needs with volunteer and donor interests, the department uses service as a tool to strengthen individual and institutional investment in Met Council’s work.

The Director of Volunteer Programs and Fulfillment Centers works hand‑in‑hand with the Managing Director of Development and Community Initiatives to design and implement engagement opportunities for donors, prospects, and other stakeholders. The Director will manage three direct reports responsible for facilitating volunteer programs and fulfillment center operations: the Manager, Spitzer Fulfillment Center; Coordinator, Fulfillment Centers; and Field Specialist. A key component of this work is overseeing daily operations and ongoing expansion efforts at the Spitzer Fulfillment Center in Midtown Manhattan, while leading Met Council’s expansion in the Bronx and the development of a future Bronx Fulfillment Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead Met Council's volunteer engagement strategy, developing programs and experiences that deepen relationships with donors, prospects, corporate partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of volunteer and engagement events across the five boroughs and through Met Council's regional expansion.
  • Oversee operations and engagement at the Spitzer Fulfillment Center and lead the continued expansion of Met Council's Bronx presence, including the development and operation of the Bronx Fulfillment Center.
  • Manage and mentor the Volunteer Programs and Fulfillment Centers team, establishing priorities, delegating responsibilities, and ensuring successful execution across p.rograms and locations.
  • Represent Met Council at community events, volunteer programs, donor engagements, and speaking opportunities across the Tri‑State area.
  • Work closely with the Managing Director of Development and Community Initiatives and broader Development Team to create volunteer and engagement opportunities that support donor cultivation, stewardship, and fundraising goals.
  • Build and maintain strategic service partnerships with corporations, synagogues, schools, nonprofits, Hillels, and other community organizations, identifying opportunities to deepen relationships and expand engagement.
  • Design and oversee large‑scale volunteer programs, including program concept, logistics, staffing, supplies, vendor management, and coordination with internal teams.
  • Work horizontally across Met Council's social service programs, Food Programs, Development, and other departments to develop and execute initiatives where volunteerism, community engagement, and development intersect.
  • Develop and manage an annual calendar of volunteer and engagement opportunities aligned with major holidays, cultural moments, agency priorities, and development opportunities.
  • Oversee fellowship, internship, and service programs that expand Met Council's volunteer and programmatic capacity.
  • Develop strategies for volunteer and donor recognition and work with the Development Team to create pathways for continued engagement with Met Council.
  • Oversee key vendors, contracted event staff, budgets, and other resources supporting volunteer programs and Fulfillment Center operations.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing and operational support for volunteer projects across all regions.
  • Additional responsibilities as required.
  • Background in strategy, planning, and event facilitation.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and project management skills.
  • Self‑starter with demonstrated initiative and ability to anticipate needs, identify opportunities, and take ownership of new responsibilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Strong relationship‑building skills with donors, prospects, corporate partners, volunteers, and community stakeholders.
  • Experience developing and executing events, volunteer programs, and engagement opportunities.
  • Strong people management skills with the ability to lead, develop, and motivate staff.

Skills and Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • 5+ years of experience in development, donor relations, corporate engagement, nonprofit events, community engagement, and/or volunteer management.
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully managing and mentoring a team of staff and overseeing multiple programs or workstreams.
  • Experience developing engagement opportunities that support donor cultivation and stewardship.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage both strategic priorities and day‑to‑day operations across multiple locations.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and experience working effectively with diverse populations.
