Job summary

BASI GAITHERSBURG LLC is looking for a Director of Toxicology to lead a team overseeing general toxicology and safety pharmacology studies. As a mentor and manager, you will oversee teams, conduct peer reviews, and ensure client satisfaction through effective communication and deliverables.

The ideal candidate will hold a Doctoral degree, have a minimum of five years in the field, and possess strong communication and leadership skills. The position offers a base salary range of $120,200 to $175,000 along with comprehensive health benefits.

Job description

Director of Toxicology

The Director of Toxicology is the scientific leader for the site and serves as a mentor and manager for a group of Study Directors overseeing general toxicology and safety pharmacology studies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review protocols, SOPs, data, and reports; distribute workload appropriately within the team.
  • Represent Inotiv in meetings with clients as a subject‑matter expert, communicating capabilities and experience.
  • Work closely with the corporate Executive Director of Toxicology to ensure harmonization of deliverables to clients across multiple sites and lead change management when necessary.
  • Supervise assigned Study Directors, assigning personnel to specific studies/projects, reviewing weekly workload, conducting peer reviews, approving interpretation of study data and final reports, overseeing job performance, coordinating training and professional development, and performing performance management (evaluations, training, hiring, dismissal decisions, and time‑sheet approval).
  • Serve as a Study Director and/or in a technical capacity in general toxicology as required.
  • Recognize potential training needs, coordinate implementation, and review and develop new procedures, technologies, and SOPs.
  • Serve as a professional resource to other departments; prepare manuscripts and present at scientific meetings.
  • Act as an expert resource to the business development staff during proposal preparation.

  • Participate in other special projects and duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to accurately interpret and communicate scientific and organizational information with internal and external clients.
  • Ability to effectively interact with clients and regulatory personnel.
  • Ability to produce high‑quality data while working under strict deadlines.
  • Availability for weekend and holiday work as required.
  • Experience with work that requires entrance into vivarium areas and demonstrates immunological tolerance.
  • Must pass an annual physical and use additional personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Minimum Requirements
  • Doctoral degree and D.A.B.T. certification required.
  • Five years’ experience in general toxicology, pharmacology and/or related field.
  • Excellent skills in basic computer applications (email, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Preferred experience managing a team and prior publications.
  • Ability to work independently and participate in multiple pre‑clinical research studies concurrently.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Extended computer and display screen usage; ability to push, pull, and lift unassisted; stand or walk for extended periods; fine manipulation of tools and controls; read and interpret materials; verbally communicate and hear as required.

Salary & Benefits

Base salary range: $120,200 to $175,000, dependent on qualifications. Benefits include health and dental coverage, short‑ and long‑term disability, paid time off, paid parental leave, 401(k) participation with company match, and other company‑sponsored programs.
