Job summary

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) invites applications for a senior leader to design, implement, and manage comprehensive compensation, health, and retirement programs. You will partner with executives and vendors to ensure competitive, compliant, and cost‑effective total rewards.

This role leads wellness initiatives across physical, mental, and financial wellbeing and drives strategic communications across the benefits portfolio.

Qualifications

  • 6–10 years of progressive experience leading strategy, design, and implementation for employer health and retirement benefits, compensation, and wellness programs.
  • 3–5 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong financial background and the ability to apply financial insights to compensation and benefits strategy.
  • 6–10 years delivering communications to engage employees about the benefits portfolio.
  • Experience leading wellness programs focusing on physical, mental, and financial wellbeing.
  • Experience negotiating contracts, providing feedback, and ensuring agreements are executed.
  • Experience conducting RFPs and managing vendor relationships.
  • In-depth knowledge of employment laws, tax regulations, and regulatory requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or finance.

Employment Conditions

HOURS: Monday – Friday (hybrid). Additional hours as needed.

TRAVEL: Possible 3–5 days travel per year.

Position Overview

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, implementation, and administration of AAFP’s compensation, health, and retirement benefits, wellness, and work‑life programs.
  • Develop strategies that attract, retain, and engage employees while ensuring programs remain competitive, cost‑effective, and aligned with business objectives.
  • Partner closely with senior leaders and external vendors to manage compensation structures, employee benefits compliance requirements, and total rewards communications.
  • Analyze market trends and workforce data to recommend improvements that enhance the employee experience and support organizational success.
  • Oversee health, retirement, disability, paid‑time‑off, behavioral health, work‑life flexibility, and other benefits, as well as wellness offerings and compensation‑related programs and systems.
Required Qualifications
  • 6–10 years of progressive experience leading strategy, design, and implementation for employer health and retirement benefits, compensation, and wellness programs.
  • At least 3–5 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong financial background and the ability to apply financial insights to compensation and benefits strategy.
  • 6–10 years of experience developing and delivering communications to engage employees and increase their understanding of the entire portfolio of benefits and wellness programs.
  • Previous experience leading the vision, strategy, and execution of a modern and relevant employee wellness program focusing on physical, mental, and financial wellbeing.
  • Experience negotiating contracts, providing feedback, and ensuring agreements are executed appropriately.
  • Experience conducting RFPs regularly and managing vendor relationships.
  • In‑depth knowledge of employment laws, tax regulations, and regulatory requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or Finance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical proficiency with Workday.
  • Analytical and financial acumen.
