Job summary

Nonprofit Finance Fund is seeking a Director, Specialized Accounting to oversee grant accounting, NMTC accounting, and related compliance in a US-based remote role. The position reports to the Controller within Finance and requires collaboration with program, lending, and finance teams to ensure accurate reporting and adherence to funder requirements.

Office proximity is preferred to one of our US offices, with up to 20% travel.

Qualifications

  • Experience managing grant accounting, reporting, and compliance.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, FASB, and OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200).
  • Experience with Single Audit and grant-related audits.
  • Strong collaboration with program and finance teams.

Responsibilities

  • Manage grant accounting, revenue recognition, and reporting.
  • Support NMTC accounting and fund reconciliations.
  • Coordinate with programs to ensure funder compliance and reporting.
  • Prepare documentation for audits and annual financial statements.
  • Reconcile grant schedules with GL monthly.
  • Assist post-award compliance and audits as needed.

About This Role

The Director, Specialized Accounting plays a critical role in supporting NFF’s financial integrity, compliance, and operational effectiveness. This role leads key accounting work streams with a primary focus on grant accounting and compliance, New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) accounting support, and special projects as they arise. As a nonprofit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), NFF integrates mission and capital across its work. This role partners closely with program, lending, and finance colleagues to ensure accurate financial reporting, strong stewardship of restricted funds, and compliance with federal and funder requirements. This Director role is well-suited for a detail-oriented, analytical professional who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

NFF has offices in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Oakland, and Los Angeles. This is a US-based remote role, with a strong preference for candidates within commutable distance to one of NFF’s offices. NFF has core business hours where we expect all staff to be available from 9 am to 5 pm local time, and occasional travel (20%) is required.

What You Will Do

Essential responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:

Grant Accounting, Compliance, and Reporting (35%)

  • Manage financial review, accounting, and reporting for assigned grants, including federal grants subject to Single Audit requirements.
  • Ensure timely and accurate revenue recognition for grants and contributions in accordance with GAAP, FASB guidance, and OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200).
  • Prepare and post monthly journal entries related to grant revenue, expense allocations, and releases from restricted net assets.
  • Maintain grant revenue, grant receivable, and net asset release schedules; reconcile schedules to the general ledger and trial balance each month.
  • Partner with Program, Lending, and Finance teams to prepare grant financial reports and ensure alignment with funder agreements.
  • Support post-award compliance and monitoring processes and serve as a primary accounting contact for grant-related audits.
  • Prepare grant-related documentation and schedules for the annual financial audit and federal Single Audit.

NMTC Accounting & Reporting Support (35%)

  • Maintain NMTC fund-related accounting records in accordance with GAAP and fund accounting standards.
