Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Director of Health & Safety to lead and manage corporate and field safety programs for an organization with approximately 325 employees. This leadership position reports directly to the Chief Risk Officer and requires a hands-on safety professional capable of developing safety programs, driving regulatory compliance, and supporting diverse construction, utility, environmental, and infrastructure projects.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience implementing Stop Work Authority, conducting project safety assessments, managing pre-task planning, and promoting a proactive safety culture across multiple project locations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead corporate health and safety programs supporting approximately 325 employees.
  • Implement and enforce Stop Work Authority policies, empowering employees to identify hazards and stop unsafe activities.
  • Oversee pre-task planning, job hazard analyses (JHAs), risk assessments, and project-specific safety plans.
  • Conduct field safety inspections, compliance audits, and project safety assessments.
  • Lead incident and near-miss investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain corporate safety policies, procedures, and Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Coordinate employee safety training, onboarding, and annual refresher programs.
  • Maintain OSHA compliance and manage ISNetworld and Avetta accounts.
  • Partner with project managers and field leadership to identify and mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Oversee emergency response planning, safety committees, and PPE programs.
  • Travel regularly throughout the Southeast and Northeast to support project teams and field operations.
Required Industry Experience:

Candidates should demonstrate significant health and safety leadership experience across multiple disciplines, including:

  • Utility Infrastructure & Surveying: Utility construction, electrical substations, surveying operations, and remote fieldwork.
  • Environmental & Remediation: Environmental remediation, hazardous materials, environmental compliance, and site restoration.
  • Water & Wastewater: Water and wastewater infrastructure, treatment facilities, and associated construction activities.
  • Site Civil & Land Development: Excavation, grading, trenching, underground utilities, and site preparation.
  • Clearing & Land Management: Clear-cutting, land clearing, vegetation removal, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Vertical Construction: Commercial and industrial construction, working at heights, fall protection, and contractor safety oversight.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Demonstrated experience leading safety programs across multiple projects and a large employee workforce.
  • Current 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification and 8-hour annual refresher required.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, incident investigations, pre-task planning, and Stop Work Authority.
  • Experience conducting safety training, including confined space entry, fall protection, and excavation safety.
  • Professional safety certifications such as CSP, CHST, or CIH are highly desirable.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly throughout the Southeast and Northeast.
Ideal Candidate:

We are looking for a hands-on safety leader, not solely an administrative director. The successful candidate will be comfortable working directly with field personnel, visiting active construction and remediation sites, coaching project leadership, and ensuring that safety expectations are consistently implemented across the organization.

Compensation: $120,000 – $140,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
