Job summary

University of Maryland Medical System seeks a Director of Public Safety to lead security, emergency preparedness, telecommunications, and valet services across Shore Regional Health facilities, reporting to the Senior Director of Operations.

The role ensures regulatory compliance, aligns initiatives with institutional goals, and mitigates risks to protect patients, staff, visitors, and assets. Strong collaboration with internal stakeholders and law enforcement is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field; 4 years may substitute.
• 7 years of security experience.
• 5 years of supervision/managerial experience.
• De-escalation course on crisis intervention within 90 days of starting.
• Valid driver’s license required for hires on/after July 1, 2026.

Responsibilities

• Develop and lead a comprehensive security and emergency preparedness strategy.

Job Requirements

Reporting to the Senior Director of Operations, the Director of Public Safety is responsible for the strategic development and management of all security, emergency preparedness, telecommunications, and valet services across Shore Regional Health’s facilities. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, aligns security initiatives with institutional goals, and implements risk mitigation strategies to protect patients, visitors, staff, and assets. The Director will foster collaboration with internal stakeholders and external law enforcement agencies to enhance the safety and security of all facilities.

• Develop and lead a comprehensive security and emergency preparedness strategy that aligns with the mission, vision, and values of Shore Regional Health (SRH) and the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS).
• Serve as the primary liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, ensuring effective coordination of security and emergency preparedness efforts.
• Provide security training and certification programs in compliance with Maryland State legislation, including Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) and Guard Card training.
• Ensure adherence to all regulatory compliance requirements, including CMS, Joint Commission, OSHA, NFPA, IAHSS, and ASIS, while implementing risk management protocols.
• Oversee access control measures, including ID badging, keying systems, and security infrastructure to ensure patient, employee, and visitor safety.
• Develop and manage operating and capital budgets for security, emergency preparedness, and parking services, identifying opportunities for process improvements and cost efficiencies.
• Continuously assess the effectiveness of security, emergency preparedness, telecommunications, and parking programs through performance metrics, financial results, and customer feedback.
• Conduct investigatory services related to criminal activity and workplace violence incidents in collaboration with Human Resources and law enforcement agencies.
• Perform environmental and security risk assessments, developing response plans to mitigate identified threats.
• Implement and maintain security technology, including surveillance systems, access control platforms, and alarm systems to enhance safety measures.

Education & Experience - Required

• Bachelor’s degree in related field. Four (4) years of related work experience can be substituted in lieu of a degree.
• Seven (7) years security experience.
• Five (5) years supervisor experience
• Completion of an approved de-escalation course on crisis intervention required within 90 days from starting in position.
• Valid driver’s license is required for all individuals hired into this role on or after July 1, 2026

Education & Experience - Preferred

• Master’s degree in related field
• Heart Saver, CPR, Stop the Bleed and/or Narcan training
• Hospital or healthcare security experience
• Certification in healthcare security (i.e., Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA), Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO)) or other related security certifications.
