Summary

The UNC Health Alliance Director of Opportunity Development is responsible for actively participating in and shaping UNC Health Alliance's overall strategy for regional and statewide clinical integration, payor relationship development, and advanced payment modeling. The Director will utilize their extensive knowledge of healthcare delivery, as well as their strategic thought leadership to properly evaluate opportunities and provide thoughtful business recommendations in support of value based contracting and overall organizational planning.

The Director of Opportunity Development works closely with senior leadership to drive the business strategy of UNC Health and UNCHA, fostering effective working relationships with physicians, payers, employer groups and internal stakeholders all working in alignment to generate industry leading outcomes. The Director is part of a core team that evaluates and executes business development opportunities that drive growth and profitability under value-based care and alternative payment models.

The Director of Opportunity Development will assist in developing and informing the strategic direction of the organization for network growth, partnership affiliations, direct to employer relationships, managed care contracts, joint ventures, and other market expansion opportunities. The Director will also engage in strategic planning, business development, and external relations functions to support achievement of short and long-term goals.

Responsibilities
  • Business Development and Strategic Initiatives: Provides leadership for business development and strategic initiatives between UNC Health Alliance and other parties. Develops and informs the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Communication and Relationships: Establishes and maintains positive, ongoing relationships with internal and external health care organizations and partners and advances strategic relationships of UNC Health Alliance.
  • Business Planning: Provides strategic support for a wide range of value based contracting and organizational planning efforts. Provides business insight into implications of findings, develops business plans, and recommends opportunities for improvement.
  • Programmatic Administration and Evaluation: Reviews and negotiates payer contracts and terms and analyzes proposals to ensure consistency with strategic objectives. Manages complex programmatic initiatives and makes recommendations to senior leadership about the implications of program and market development investments.
  • Strategic Planning: Actively leads and participates in internal and external committees. Collaborates with representatives throughout the organization to plan, organize and execute strategies with the goal of enhancing financial and quality outcomes, improved service and achieving a high level of customer satisfaction.

Other Information
  • Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Health Administration or related field. Master's degree in related field highly preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • Professional Experience Requirements: Requires seven (7) years of relevant experience (e.g., business development, strategy, consulting) including three (3) years in a management role.
  • Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: The successful candidate will be expected to develop and present complex information in an effective and action orientated manner to a wide variety of audiences, including but not limited to, the Health Alliance Leadership Team, Primary Care and Specialty Providers, Senior System Executives, as well as, External Stakeholders. This position will also provide direction and leadership to employees within the Opportunity Development department and oversee the recruitment and on-going development of employees.
Preferred experience
  • 4-8 years of experience in value-based care, alternative payment models, and/or managed care as well as experience in Commercial, Medicaid, Episodic, direct-to-employer, and/or Medicare Advantage contracts, preferably in North Carolina.
  • Familiarity and experience working with and analyzing payer data (quality, claims, utilization, customer experience), actuarial principles, forecasting of alternative payment model performance, HEDIS measures, and SDOH data.
  • 2-4 years assessing, designing, and negotiating alternative payment models, partnerships, contracts, and contract amendments, preferably in North Carolina.
