A leading organization seeks a Pro Bono Coordinator to enhance legal services for clients. The role involves developing service delivery models, managing volunteer programs, and ensuring effective communication of pro bono initiatives. Ideal candidates will possess strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to serving diverse communities.
Provides and develops broad legal expertise in the most common areas of needs for clients including Consumer, Education, Family, Landlord-Tenant, Indian Estate Planning, Protection Orders, Tribal Land Issues, Youth Advocacy, Emancipation and Guardianship types cases managed in Tribal Court, to support San Manuel Tribal Court proceedings through the use of webinars, clinics, volunteer and pro-bono recruiting ensuring that San Manuel Tribal Court’s mission of providing equitable access to justice is met.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Develop a robust, client-centered service delivery model, including cases fully placed with pro bono counsel, co-counsel with pro bono counsel and direct legal services to clients.
2. Develop media and social media strategies to promote pro bono projects and initiatives, ensuring that the San Manuel Tribal Court’s mission of providing equitable access to justice is effectively communicated and supported.
3. Work effectively as part of a team that includes attorneys, support staff, community partners, volunteer and clients.
4. Manage and oversee the Pro Bono Training Initiative program. Performs duties of project and pro bono attorney training lead.
5. Manage volunteer programs, develop training initiatives, and implement internal systems related to pro bono recruitment, case placement, evaluation, tracking and reporting.
6. Provide dedicated mentorship and training to pro bono attorneys and other volunteers participating in the San Manuel Volunteer Program.
7. Coordinate and supervise pro bono volunteers at clinics.
8. Provides mentorship and support to pro bono attorneys working on full scope cases.
9. Develop, maintain and coordinate all non-lawyer programs at Tribal Court, including law student volunteer programs, clinics, webinars and other related programs.
10. Work with Tribal Court staff and volunteers to develop, coordinate and support in person and online pro bono substantive legal trainings.
11. Review and identify cases for project and facilitate pro bono case placements.
12. Provide direct transactional legal assistance to clients on a case-by-case basis.
13. Conduct initial intake interviews with clients, as needed.
14. Build and maintain relationships with law schools, community organizations, and other pro bono stakeholders.
15. Network with other Native American entities, community-based organizations and individuals that help to increase the reach of the Office of Advocacy to provide holistic services to clients.
16. Participate in conferences and meetings, both virtually and in-person.
17. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
· Active licensure in State Bar of any state or territory within the United States, and in good standing, is required.
· Minimum five (5) years' experience in legal services, including project management, training, data collection, survey design, and data assessment.
· Including 3 years of experience or knowledge of pro bono systems and volunteer program development.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)
· Demonstrated knowledge of Indian (Native American) law and community legal needs.
· Experience working within law school recruitment systems, preferred.
· Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
· Ability to think strategically and lead collaboratively.
· Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects.
· Strong computer and technical problem-solving skills.
· Experience in data collection and analysis for project planning and reporting.
· Willingness to travel offsite and work beyond a minimum 8.0 hour workday, including occasional evenings and weekends.
· Experience in Tribal court, federal and/or state court systems and legal proceedings. Legal aid organization experience is a plus.
· Proactive approach to develop, oversee and manage the Pro Bono Training initiative for legal and non-legal parties.
· Familiarity with community outreach and engagement strategies.
· Knowledge of legal technology and case management systems.
· Demonstrated commitment to serving the needs of clients.
· Ability to work effectively as part of a team while also able to work independently and exercise resourcefulness and initiative in the execution of projects and tasks.
· Ability to work effectively and maintain positive relations with partner organizations, staff, volunteers, students, and community members.
· Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully and maintain position relations with diverse populations and stakeholders.
· Enthusiasm for mentoring volunteers recruited to expand legal services provided to client group.
· Ability to meet deadlines and perform multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
· Strong writing and public speaking skills.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS
· At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
· State Bar licensure.
Driving Responsibilities: Role requires regular commuting between locations. A valid driver's license and vehicle insurance with minimum liability limits is required. Role will not operate or drive Tribe-owned vehicles or patron vehicles.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ WORKING CONDITIONS – ENVIRONMENT

· Primary work environment is in a climate-controlled office setting.
· Work requires travel to attend meetings, trade shows, and conferences.
· Incumbents may be required to work evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
· Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.
· Strength sufficient to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects and/or move up to 40 pounds occasionally.
· Sedentary work: involves sitting most of the time. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
· Physical activities that apply to the essential functions of the position are balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
· Hearing sufficient to hear conversational levels in person, via videoconference and over the telephone.
· Speech sufficient to make oneself heard and understood in person, in front of groups, in meetings, via videoconference and over the telephone.
· Visual acuity that meets the requirements of the position: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading and visual inspection of employees, visitors or facility.
· Mobility sufficient to safely move in an office environment, walk, stoop, bend and kneel, and enter, exit and operate a motor vehicle in the course of travel to promotional events, meetings, conferences, trade shows and San Manuel properties.
· Endurance sufficient to sit, walk and stand for extended periods, and maintain efficiency throughout the entire work shift and during extended work hours.
· The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles including secondhand smoke.
