Job summary

The City of Raleigh, North Carolina seeks a forward-thinking Director of Transportation to oversee transit and parking systems, road maintenance, and multi‑modal planning. The role reports to the Assistant City Manager and collaborates with City leadership and regional partners to advance innovation in a growing community.

Candidates should have 10+ years of related experience, a relevant degree, and a track record of leading large teams.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressively responsible related experience in transportation, public administration, and management.
• Knowledge of transit and other multi-modal strategies and innovations.

Responsibilities

• Oversees direct staff supervision, performance evaluations, hiring, discipline and termination processes.
• Directs the department’s operations and programs; leads strategic planning and program evaluation.
• Oversees policy development, standards, budgets and resource optimization.
• Represents the City in discussions with management, boards, agencies and partners.
• Develops short/long-term goals, negotiates contracts, and communicates program status.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in urban planning/transportation planning/civil engineering

Graduate degree or professional certification (MS/MPA/PE/AICP) preferred
