Job summary

St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in San Jose, CA seeks a part-time Director of Traditional Music to lead and develop our traditional worship music ministry. You will work closely with pastors, organist/accompanist, choirs, ensembles, and staff to enrich worship and glorify God.

The ideal candidate will have strong musical leadership, experience directing choirs or ensembles, and collaborative approach, with familiarity in Lutheran hymnody preferred.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Direct the Chancel Choir, handbell choir, and other ensembles, including rehearsals.
• Select hymns and musical offerings for traditional worship.
• Collaborate with organist/accompanist to coordinate worship music.
• Work with pastors to support worship life of the congregation.
• Coordinate hymn/music slides with the church administrator.
• Maintain the music library and care of organ, pianos, bells/chimes, robes, and equipment.
• Develop the annual Traditional Music budget.
• Arrange substitute organists/pianists for worship and rehearsals as needed.
• Lead the annual Christmas Cantata, including music selection and logistics.

Director of Traditional Music
St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church | San Jose, California Part-time | 12–15 hours per week

St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church is seeking a gifted, collaborative Director of Traditional Music to lead and develop our traditional worship music ministry. The Director works closely with the pastors, organist/accompanist, choirs, ensembles, and church staff to provide excellent music that enriches worship and glorifies God.

Responsibilities:

• Direct the Chancel Choir, handbell choir, and other musical ensembles, including regular rehearsals.
• Select appropriate hymns and musical offerings for traditional worship.
• Collaborate with the organist/accompanist to coordinate worship music.
• Work with pastors to support and enhance the congregation’s worship life.
• Coordinate hymn and music slides with the church administrator.
• Maintain the music library and oversee the care of the organ, pianos, bells/chimes, choir robes, and other music equipment.
• Develop the annual Traditional Music budget.
• Arrange substitute organists/pianists for worship and rehearsals as needed.
• Lead the annual Christmas Cantata, including music selection, rehearsals, musicians, technical support, and logistics.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Strong musical and ensemble leadership skills.
• Experience directing choirs and/or instrumental ensembles.
• Experience selecting music for Christian worship.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• A collaborative approach to working with pastors, musicians, staff, and volunteers.
• Familiarity with traditional Lutheran worship and hymnody is preferred.
• Formal training or professional experience in music, church music, or a related field is desirable.
