Director of Music (Part-Time)
Immanuel Lutheran Church | Charlottesville, Virginia
Immanuel Lutheran Church is a congregation of forgiven sinners who love Jesus, love the liturgy, and love to sing! We are seeking a church musician who loves the same things and can help us to love them better. A congregation of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod committed to the historic worship of the Church, we believe the primary instrument of Christian worship is the voice of God’s gathered people. We treasure the musical heritage of the Church while also joyfully employing newer hymns and songs that are theologically faithful, musically excellent, and readily sung by the congregation.
Although they need not be a member of the LCMS, the ideal candidate for this position will share these loves and commitments and be proficient in leading congregational singing on the organ and piano (currently a pipe organ and recently purchased Kawai grand). He or she will be capable of identifying and partnering with professional and high-quality amateur musicians for occasional and special services (e.g. strings, brass, vocalists; individuals and small ensembles).
The exact parameters of and competitive compensation for the position will be further delineated consistent with the candidate’s skills, experience, and availability. While the Music Director’s primary obligation is supporting Sunday (currently 10:15am) and holiday worship services, past directors have also led vocal and bell choirs, participated in worship planning, arranged new songs for congregational singing, organized and overseen concert series, and taken up educational roles in instructing members in the history and theology of church music.
At present, the Director of Music at Immanuel is a quarter- to half-time position with potential room for growth as the congregation and music program expand. The position may be particularly suitable for a musician combining church work with other professional or teaching commitments.
